Manager Surgical Services, Registered Nurse

Position Overview

The Manager of Surgical Services is a key member of the patient care leadership team, responsible for inspiring, mentoring, and guiding clinical and non-clinical staff. This role manages daily clinical operations across perioperative services, focusing on patient care management, resource management, and clinical outcomes. The Manager collaborates with the Director of Surgical Services in supervising department staff, developing clinical competencies, providing education, and overseeing in-services. This position has 24-hour accountability for the department's daily operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering a culture centered on caring and healing.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and oversee perioperative patient care operations.
  2. Manage staff schedules, call rotations, vacation planning, and attendance documentation.
  3. Lead in-services and educational programs; maintain staff competencies and cross-training.
  4. Analyze resource needs and participate in procurement of instruments and equipment.
  5. Collaborate with medical staff and leadership to resolve conflicts and promote positive relationships.
  6. Lead quality and performance improvement initiatives across the unit and hospital-wide.
  7. Ensure adherence to perioperative standards (AORN, ASPAN, AAMI, SGNA).
  8. Participate in personnel decisions, including hiring, disciplinary actions, and credential verification.
  9. Navigate clinical information systems effectively.
  10. Contribute to policy development within hospital and department.
  11. Advocate for patient rights and address ethical issues.
  12. Handle patient complaints promptly and communicate resolutions.
  13. Identify departmental issues and take appropriate actions using critical thinking.
  14. Assist with departmental duties outside of primary scope as needed.
  15. Supervise personnel records and documentation timely.
  16. Assist in budget development and monitor operational and capital expenses.
  17. Coordinate performance improvement activities.
  18. Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and standards.
  19. Maintain quality outcomes and patient satisfaction metrics.
  20. Foster team communication and recognize employee achievements.
  21. Work with surgical teams to meet service line goals and explore new business opportunities.
  22. Manage surgical block utilization and departmental operations.
  23. Identify critical issues and communicate effectively with leadership.
  24. Complete projects timely and demonstrate initiative.
  25. Participate in committee work and departmental meetings.
  26. Oversee orientation and ongoing education for staff.
  27. Ensure staff qualifications and competence.
  28. Analyze space and resource needs.
  29. Build positive relationships with staff and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in OR, PACU, SDS.
  • Experience in Sterile Processing and Surgical Operations.
  • BSN degree required.
  • Current Illinois RN license.
  • National certification in nursing leadership or specialty within 1 year of hire.
