Our 30-bed Observation Unit provides care to individuals who do not meet admission criteria but cannot be safely discharged from the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities:
- Models safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle.
- Communicates safety hazards identified in the workplace with peers and management.
- Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles and applies them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.
- Provides detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to guide them through care episodes and transitions.
- Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues, potentially serving as a preceptor.
- Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback and improving practice.
- Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment.
- Formulates daily goals and a holistic plan of care involving the patient as a partner.
- Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote communication among caregivers.
- Incorporates national professional organization goals, as well as business unit and health system objectives, to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
- Participates actively in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and supports change to enhance care quality and practice environment.
- Serves as an engaged partner on the care team, responding to team needs for assistance and collaboration.
- Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and communicates them to colleagues and management.
- Takes personal responsibility for improving patient satisfaction and care quality.
- Uses research and evidence-based practice to support clinical improvement, discusses research issues, and influences patient care plans.
