Job Overview

This position has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for delivering nursing care through the nursing process. The incumbent is accountable for applying competent clinical knowledge, using independent judgment, and delegating care to healthcare providers to achieve quality patient outcomes.

The role requires demonstrating knowledge and skills at the novice level to provide relevant care for patients across the lifespan, assessing and interpreting patient data to meet age-specific needs. This professional nursing role is based in an inpatient hospital setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Certification, and Licensure:
  • Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses or appropriate state board, or multi-state licensure via eNLC.
  • Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 60 days of hire, prior to license expiration unless delayed by circumstances like pandemic-related testing center closures.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
Experience:
  • Less than 12 months of nursing experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recognize patient safety concerns using appropriate resources.
  • Provide education tailored to patient learning needs.
  • Incorporate patient individuality and data into care delivery.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and document findings.
  • Use teach-back methods to evaluate education effectiveness.
  • Apply Evidence-Based Practice in nursing care.
  • Participate in patient-centered care models.
  • Document problems and issues in care plans.
  • Develop skills to care for more complex patients with experienced colleagues.
  • Commit to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry.
  • Maintain accountability for delegated nursing care.
  • Recognize scope of practice for all team members.
  • Conduct holistic, culturally sensitive data collection.
  • Assess family dynamics' impact on health and wellness.
  • Follow the ANA Code of Ethics to guide practice.
  • Identify discriminatory practices affecting diverse populations.
  • Individualize care based on patient beliefs, barriers, and readiness to learn.
Specialty Accreditation Requirements

Complete annual education related to accreditation standards through various training methods.

Physical Requirements
  • Minimize manual patient lifting; use equipment for transfers over 35 pounds.
  • Work requires strength and stamina, including lifting and moving objects over 40 lbs.
  • Normal visual and auditory acuity required.
Work Environment
  • Work hours may be irregular and extended.
  • Work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased, water, and electrical hazards.

CAPE Program and Career Progression

The CAPE program promotes professional development through a clinical ladder system. Nurses can advance levels based on experience, education, and competencies, including demonstration of leadership roles and participation in quality improvement and governance at various organizational levels.
