Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center seeks a Dental Assistant to support dental care delivery by preparing treatment rooms, instruments, and materials, and by assisting faculty, residents and students in accordance with the State Dental Practice Act.

The role involves patient preparation, chart gathering, radiographic procedures, infection control, and record documentation within the clinic. A dental assistant registry and relevant coursework or experience are required.

Qualifications

• High School or equivalent is required.
• One year of related experience or completion of an approved dental assistant course is required.
• Dental Assistant registry with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist dentist or hygienist at chair side.
• Administer Plaque Index tests and provide oral hygiene instructions to patients.
• Gather charts, equipment and supplies for dental appointments.
• Practice infection control procedures according to policy guidelines.
• Expose and develop dental x-rays using EVAsoft software.
• Count instruments and sharps and maintain logs.
• Document information into the patient record; assist with typing notes for EMR.
• Answer routine questions and refer others to the dentist.
• Take vital signs and record before invasive procedures.

Major/Essential Functions

• Assist dentist or hygienist at chair side.
• Administer Plaque Index test and provides oral hygiene instructions to patients.
• Gathers charts, equipment and supplies in a timely manner for use during dental appointments.
• Practices infection control procedures according to policy guidelines in Policy and Procedure Manual.
• Exposes and develops dental x-rays; will be proficient with the use of the EVAsoft Dental Imaging Software.
• Counts instruments and sharps and maintains logs of use.
• Documents information into dental record of care; will assist with the typing of the doctor's patient treatment notes for inclusion into the EMR system.
• Answers routine questions and refers others to the dentist.
• Takes vital signs and records information in record prior to invasive procedures.

Required Qualifications

High School or equivalent. One (1) year of related experience or completion of an approved dental assistant course is required. Dental Assistant registry with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
