Job summary

The New York Times is seeking an experienced journalist to helm the Mid-Atlantic Region as its bureau chief. You will conceive and direct coverage plans, identify revelatory follow-ups, and guide editors using your regional expertise.

You will write quickly, clearly and on deadline across formats to explain and visualize the region for readers. The position may be based in-office in Washington D.C or remote in the region, with four days per week in the office if onsite.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience at a journalism or media company.
  • 5+ years of reporting from a region for a national and global audience.
  • Strong journalistic writing with clear ethics and news judgment.
  • A portfolio including politics, news, enterprise and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a sense of what is coming next by watching regional themes and events.
  • Oversee regional coverage by scanning competition and guiding editors on story relevance.
  • Act as the Times' ambassador for your region and mentor reporters.
  • Cultivate a deep source network among authorities, politicians, law enforcement, and cultural figures.
  • Develop relationships with stringers and freelancers and identify contributors for breaking stories.
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas with colleagues and keep regular contact with peers.
  • Cover breaking news, enterprise, accountability pieces and diverse formats to explain the region.
  • Support and uphold journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth.
  • Report to an editor on the National Desk.
