Job summary

The New York Times National desk seeks an ambitious Chicago-based correspondent to cover the Midwest from a remote position. You will report on politics, identity, weather, and regional stories with fast, accurate storytelling tailored for readers across platforms.

You will build a strong source network in the region, develop enterprise pieces and scoops, and work with editors to deliver timely coverage while upholding Times standards of independence and integrity.

Qualifications

• 5+ years' experience in journalism or media company
• Strong reporting and writing skills meeting journalistic standards
• Portfolio includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis

Responsibilities

• Produce a portfolio ranging from breaking news to enterprise pieces and scoops for the Midwest audience.
• Identify sources, conduct thorough research, and develop timely, accurate stories.
• Write clear, concise news stories on deadline following journalistic style guidelines.
• Cultivate a deep source network including officials, unions, and cultural figures.
• Monitor news and generate story ideas to explain regional dynamics.
• Write with authority, independence, and accuracy.
• Collaborate with colleagues and editors across the region.
• Support journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth.
• Report to a National Editor.
