The New York Times seeks an experienced journalist to lead the Mid-Atlantic Region as its bureau chief, overseeing coverage from DC to Ohio and Kentucky while shaping enterprise reporting and national relevance.

You will write quickly and clearly on deadline, embrace multiple formats, and cultivate a deep source network. You will report to the National Desk and collaborate with editors and regional reporters across the region.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company.
  • 5+ years of experience of reporting from a region for a national and global audience.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.
  • A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a sense of what is coming next by watching themes in the region and a calendar of what news and events are coming.
  • Oversee what is happening in the region on a constant basis by scanning competition and guiding editors on the relevance of stories from their region.
  • Be the Times’ ambassador to your region or bureau; demonstrate authority and share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Cultivate a deep source network of authorities, politicians, sheriffs, union reps, cultural figures, law enforcement, agency representatives and beyond.
  • Develop relationships with stringers and freelancers in your region, add new talent, assess performance and identify contributors for stories when they break.
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas with colleagues in your region or adjacent beats; initiate collaborations and keep regular contact.
  • Operate across breaking news, enterprise, accountability pieces and scoops, embracing diverse formats and collaborations.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth.
