Job summary

The New York Times Company is seeking an experienced journalist to helm the Mid-Atlantic Region as its bureau chief. You will understand issues across DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, WV, OH and KY, and craft coverage that informs readers with clear, vivid writing.

You will write quickly and accurately on deadline, lead editors and reporters in the region, and cultivate a deep network of sources to drive reporting across formats. The role may be based in Washington, D.C. in-office or remote within the region.

Qualifications

• 10+ years' experience at a journalism or media company.
• 5+ years of reporting from a region for a national and global audience.
• Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards.
• A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis.

Responsibilities

• Drive a sense of what is coming next by watching themes in the region and a calendar of events.
• Oversee regional coverage by scanning competition and guiding editors on story relevance.
• Be the Times' ambassador to your region; share expertise with colleagues and lead regional reporters.
• Cultivate a deep source network of authorities, politicians, sheriffs, union reps, cultural figures and law enforcement.
• Develop relationships with stringers and freelancers, adding new talent and assigning contributors when needed.
• Brainstorm and develop ideas with colleagues in your region, initiating collaborations and keeping regular contact.
• Cover a range from breaking news to enterprise and accountability pieces in multiple formats.
• Support journalistic independence and uphold the mission to seek truth.
