Job summary

Tampa General Hospital is seeking a Referral Specialist to act as the primary contact for patients and providers, coordinating referrals, and scheduling provider-directed appointments within USF Health. You will obtain authorizations, handle referrals, maintain records, and collaborate with clinical teams to ensure timely, patient-centered care while adhering to policies and service standards.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Two (2) years of Front Desk experience in healthcare.
• Experience with referrals and authorizations preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary contact for patients and providers to schedule referred appointments and services within USF Health.
• Screen, process, and track internal and external referrals to ensure timely handling.
• Collaborate with clinical staff to schedule timely, clinically appropriate appointments based on provider direction and patient needs.
• Obtain required authorizations for visits, procedures, surgeries, and medications per payer guidelines.
• Investigate incomplete referrals and follow up to ensure accurate processing.
• Respond to messages related to patient referrals to support scheduling and continuity of care.
• Maintain organized filing for referral documents and department records.
• Route appointment and referral information using electronic systems or phone communication.
• Answer and direct incoming calls from physicians, nurses, admin staff, departments, hospitals, and external agencies.
• Adhere to emergency policies, clinical protocols, and service standards.
