Job summary

Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation is seeking a Part-Time Recreation Specialist I to support before/after school and summer programs. The role involves supervising staff, assisting with site operations, and coordinating events for youth across various community centers.

You will help with reporting, customer service, and program planning. Hours average around 32 per week, with potential early starts and late shifts, including occasional weekends.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require a current and valid driver’s license; Commercial driver’s license may be required.
  • Special scheduling requirements include evenings, weekends, holidays, and possible overtime.

Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours, overtime, splits shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.ScheduleThis position is anticipated to work over an average of 30 hours per week, making the selected candidate potentially eligible for the ACA City’s health benefit planOur programs operate Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM with occasional weekend work for training and special events. However, this position may work shifts that require the possibility of beginning work at 6:00 AM or ending after the last child is picked up at the end of programs, with the possibility of working split shifts. Additionally, supervisors are expected to be available as needed to meet the needs of staff and customers.As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. May be required to have a current and valid driver’s license. May require a Commercial driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Special Requirements: for Aquatics Only: Must possess valid certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Occasionally to frequently required to lifeguard during times of staff shortage. Lifeguarding duties include providing a safe swimming environment, enforcing rules, rescuing anyone in danger of drowning, administering first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen and use of AED. Special Requirements: for Early Childhood Programs Only: Must be at least 21 years of age and meet the current minimum program director staff qualifications as listed in the Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers document published by the Department of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia.
