Job summary

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation seeks a skilled groundskeeper to perform horticultural and landscape maintenance across parks and public spaces. You will operate lawn care equipment, assist with installation and repair of fencing, and help maintain athletic fields while supporting special events.

The role requires working outdoors in all weather, a valid driver’s license, and a Virginia eligible to work; overtime and weekend work are expected as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have a High school diploma or GED or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Perform horticultural and landscape maintenance across parks, buildings, fields, and public areas.
• Operate mowers, weed eaters, edgers, and related tools.
• Assist in installation, maintenance, and repair of fencing and beds.
• Load/unload materials for projects and support special events.
• Work outdoors in all weather and respond to emergencies as needed.
• Flexible schedule including weekends and holidays; may supervise junior staff.

By providing enriching and memorable lifelong experiences, we strive to enhance the quality of life for our community by improving the physical and mental well-being of our residents.Representative Work Functions and ResponsibilitiesPerform horticultural functions and landscape or general maintenance, construction, litter removal, and repair functions necessary to maintain roadways, public buildings, parks, schools, athletic fields, and other designated public areas; and may provide limited supervision to subordinate groundskeepers.Assist in the coordination and supervision of subordinate groundskeepers.Perform landscape and grounds maintenance services.Operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, edging, and trimming equipment; use common gardening and hand tools; and operate a variety of motor equipment.Collect and dispose of trash and debris.Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of fencing. Assist in the development and clearance of undeveloped areas.Load and unload tools, equipment, dirt, gravel, clay, and sand for project assignments.Assist in mulching, maintaining, and weeding plant and shrub beds, lawn areas, and walkways.Prune and trim trees and shrubs. Line athletic fields.Perform some painting, masonry, and carpentry tasks.Assist in the support of special events.Work during emergencies, inclement weather, or other essential operating periods to perform vital services such as storm damage cleanup, snow removal, and other horticultural duties as required.Work independently or with other personnel.Work is performed outside in all-weather to include extreme temperatures.Work schedules may be adjusted seasonally.Selected candidates must have a current and valid Virginia or North CarolinaSelected candidates must furnish and wear steel-toed safety boots.Driver’s License (a learner permit is not a valid driver’s license), pass a pre-employment physical and have a satisfactory background check.As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation).
