Job summary

The City of Onalaska’s recreation department is seeking a Program Leader and Assistant Program Leader to provide overall direction and oversight of recreational programs.

Responsibilities include developing practice plans, teaching rules, leading tryouts and practices, coordinating materials, setting up facilities, and supervising staff. Open to students and adults with sports knowledge; wage range $13.00 to $17.00 per hour for seasonal/limited‑term positions with no benefits.

Qualifications

  • Student or adult with sports knowledge.
  • Experience playing, coaching, or being part of a sport or program of similar nature.
  • Strong leadership techniques/skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement practice plans and lesson plans.
  • Teach participants the rules and regulations of the activity/sport and/or program.
  • Lead tryouts, practices, evaluate participant skill levels, and develop teams.
  • Develop program roles, guidelines, and distribute program materials such as equipment, forms, uniforms, and schedules.
  • Set‑up and clean‑up facilities, report injuries, hazards, and program concerns to supervisor.
  • Respond to accidents and emergencies; administer first aid as trained and complete incident reports.
  • Maintain program equipment and its condition.
  • Attend and run training and organizational meetings of a program.
  • Maintain communication with program participants, staff, and office staff.
  • Supervise seasonal or part‑time staff and ensure proper instruction and supervision of participants.
  • Resolve conflicts or problems that occur during program operation and between staff and participants.
  • Assist with other job‑related work or special projects as requested.
