Job summary

City of Onalaska invites applications for an Instructor and Traveling Coach who will direct and oversee recreation programs. The role involves guiding staff, coaches, volunteers and spectators on planning, schedules, safety and program structure.

You will lead practices, coach teams, teach sportsmanship, and manage materials while maintaining equipment and coordinating with the Recreation Manager. This is a seasonal, non-benefit position operating under the Recreation Department.

Qualifications

• Experience playing, coaching or participating in a sport or program of a similar nature.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Applicant must be a student or adult with sports knowledge and possess supervision and leadership skills.

Role Overview

The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire an Instructor and Traveling Coach. Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager/Coordinator, the employee in this position is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of any portion associated with a recreation program.

The instructor independently provides direction to staff, coaches, volunteers, umpires/referees and spectators on program planning, team selection, rule interpretation, schedules, equipment usage, safety and program structure.

Essential Job Functions

• Develop and implement practice plans and lessons.
• Coach teams in in‑house recreational leagues.
• Teach participants sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork and the basic rules of the sport.
• Lead practices, evaluate participant skill levels, and develop team roles for coaches, volunteers and parents.
• Create and enforce team guidelines.
• Distribute and collect program materials such as equipment, plans, uniforms, schedules, and forms.
• Maintain program equipment and its condition.
• Assist with set‑up and cleanup of facilities.
• Report injuries, hazards and program concerns to the Recreation Manager or designee.
• Respond to accidents and emergencies, administering first aid as appropriate.
• Attend training and organizational meetings as requested.
• Maintain communication with participants and office staff.
• Resolve conflicts among parents, participants, coaches and officials.
• Demonstrate willingness to perform other job‑related tasks as needed.

Physical Requirements

Work involves typical recreation‑program duties and may require lifting, standing, and other physical activities associated with program management.

Qualifications

Compensation

Wage range: $10.00 – $13.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and budget. Positions are seasonal, limited‑term and do not include benefits.
