Job summary

City of Onalaska is seeking seasonally employed recreation coaches to oversee program direction, coach participants, and supervise staff and volunteers. Responsibilities include organizing equipment, scheduling, safety, and communication with participants and staff.

The roles require high school or college level experience, sports knowledge, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. A valid driver’s license is required; the city is an Equal Opportunity Employer with a drug-free workplace.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Teach participants the importance of sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork.
• Develop team roles for assistant coaches/volunteers and parents.
• Develop team guidelines.
• Distribute and collect program materials such as equipment, plans, uniforms, schedules and forms.
• Be responsible for program equipment and its condition.
• Assist with set‑up and cleanup of facilities.
• Report injuries, facility hazards, and program concerns to the Recreation Supervisor/Coordinator.
• Respond to accidents and emergencies in an appropriate manner; administer first aid according to the blood‑borne pathogen exposure control plan.
• Attend training and organizational meetings.
• Maintain communication with program participants, program staff, and office staff.
• Resolve conflicts between participant parents, participants, coaches, and officials/umpires.
• Contribute to a cooperative working effort by demonstrating a willingness to perform other job‑related work as required or requested.
• Assist others and complete special projects as scheduled or requested.
• Instruct, coach, and lead specialized practices/lessons in the sport or activity (e.g., golf, tennis, track, arts & crafts).
• Travel to other communities to compete against skilled teams.
• Teach participants advanced and technical rules and regulations of the sport (e.g., baseball, football, volleyball, basketball).

Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager/Coordinator, the employee in this position is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of any portion associated with a recreation program. Independently provides direction to staff, coaches, volunteers, umpires/referees and spectators on issues relating to a program plan and structure, team selection, rule interpretation, schedules, equipment needs and use, safety of participants, umpires/referees, staff and spectators.

Compensation

Wage range: $12.00 to $16.00 per hour for these seasonal, limited‑term positions. No benefits are associated with limited‑term positions.
