Job summary

City of Golden is seeking a Recreation Coordinator - Athletics to coordinate and supervise youth and adult athletic programs, rentals, leagues, and events. You will oversee facilities, staffing, scheduling, and safety, while supporting budget and purchasing within policy guidelines.

The role requires coordinating with partners to promote programming, ensuring a welcoming environment, and enforcing department policies with strong customer service.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Administration, Physical Education, or related field preferred.
  • 1 year athletic programming experience required; 3 years experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record; First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) and CPRP certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop, organize, promote, implement, and evaluate athletic programs to meet city/department goals.
  • Directly manage rental and permitting processes for athletic facilities, fields, courts, and amenities.
  • Oversee assigned athletic facilities including staffing, scheduling, service delivery, rental administration, and safety.
  • Support budget development and purchase equipment, uniforms, and other materials within budget constraints.
  • Coordinate with other departments, external agencies, schools, and partners to market programs and share resources.
  • Support implementation of contracted services and programs.
  • Conduct safety inspections to maintain a safe environment for participants.
  • Enforce department policies and provide excellent customer service.
  • Prepare and coordinate marketing and promotional materials.
  • Assist supervisor with data collection and analysis to inform program health and priorities.
  • May support athletic turf and facility maintenance.

Under the general direction of the Recreation Supervisor – Athletics, coordinates and supervises youth and adult programs, leagues, rentals, tournaments, special events, classes, and clinics within the athletics division. This position is responsible for all aspects of program service delivery, including creation, planning, implementation, evaluation, and assessment. This requires staff coordination and supervision, facility oversight, support for budget management, and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for all participants and guests.

  • Under general supervisory direction, coordinates, develops, organizes, promotes, implements, and evaluates athletic programs, services, and resources to meet city, department, and division goals and objectives.
  • Directly manages the rental and permitting processes for all city athletic facilities, fields, courts, and amenities.
  • Responsible for direct oversight of assigned athletic facilities including staffing, scheduling, service delivery, rental administration, financial accounting, asset management, and facility safety.
  • Supports the supervisor in budget development and implements specific budget line items demonstrating financial stewardship. Purchases equipment, uniforms, awards, and other miscellaneous materials in accordance with budget constraints and purchasing policy.
  • Supports supervisor in coordinating with other department workgroups and city departments, external agencies, schools, and community partners to market and promote programming, allocate space usage, and ensure appropriate resource sharing. Attends regular league meetings and may attend industry-specific meetings as a city representative.
  • Supports the implementation of contracted services and programs.
  • Conducts safety inspections as necessary to maintain a safe environment for program participants. Promotes a safe environment for staff and patrons.
  • Enforces all department policies, rules, and regulations while providing exceptional customer service. Addresses and reports problems, concerns, or emergencies that may affect the program or the City.
  • Prepares and coordinates marketing and promotional materials.
  • Assists the supervisor with data collection and analysis to inform program health and priorities.
  • May support aspects of athletic turf and facility maintenance as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises seasonal and part-time staff assigned to athletic programs. Assigns the work of volunteers and contracted officials. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

High School Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s Degree with studies in Parks and Recreation, Administration, Physical Education, or related field preferred. 1 year of athletic programming experience required, 3 years’ experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid driver’s license with good driving record. First Aid, CPR, and AED certified or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) through the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) preferred. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Ability to carry out assigned tasks proficiently.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to operate a small truck, tractor, utility vehicle, and a variety of tools.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

Computer, printer, copier, phone and related office equipment. Small truck, shovel, rake, tractor, utility vehicle, tamper, field drag, tape measure, bases, chalk, paint, hammer, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, and guide string.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
