Job summary

The City of Berkeley, in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department, invites applications for Recreation Activity Leader to organize, coordinate and lead a wide variety of indoor and outdoor recreation activities at city parks, playgrounds and recreation centers.

During the school year, responsibilities include Afterschool Programs, Special Events, and Building Monitoring; in the summer, roles may include Tots, Pre-K, Teen programs, Berkeley Day Camp, or youth sports.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and either:
  • 1) Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience leading a variety of athletic and recreation activities;
  • 2) Completion of major college coursework leading to a degree in recreation, physical education, group work or a closely related field may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis;
  • 3) Extensive training and/or experience in a specialized field of endeavor such as dance, ceramics, photography or nature study which has occurred over a period of several years and has resulted in an acceptable level of expertise and the ability to impart knowledge of this field to others.

Responsibilities

  • Work assignments may include Afterschool Programs, Special Events, Building Monitoring, and summer programs such as Tots, Pre-K, Teen programs, Berkeley Day Camp or youth sports.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Recreation Activity Leader in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will organize, coordinate and lead a wide variety of indoor and outdoor recreation activities at City parks, playgrounds and recreation centers.

During the school year, Recreation Activity Leaders may be assigned to work Afterschool Programs, Special Events, and/or Building Monitoring.
During the summer, Recreation Activity Leaders may be assigned to work Tots, Pre-K, or Teen programs, playground programs, Berkeley Day Camp or specialty camps, or youth sports.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities for this classification is:
