Job summary

The City of Stanton, California, is seeking a part-time Recreation Program Assistant to help plan and run a variety of programs at multiple sites, with hours up to 28 per week including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

You will organize activities, oversee equipment, promote safety, and support special events and sports programs while maintaining positive relationships with participants and staff. A valid California driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in providing recreation and leisure time services.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; college coursework in Recreation or related field is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan and implement a diversified program including sports, crafts, active and passive games on a park or playground setting.
  • Requisition, issue, receive and oversee the use of equipment and materials.
  • Ensure safety precautions are observed during free play.
  • Care for and maintain equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of special events and services.
  • Assist with the implementation of the sports program.
  • Maintain effective communication and harmonious relationships with the public, participants and associates.
  • May be assigned to operate City vehicles transporting seniors; subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing under federal transit regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job description

Summary Description:

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of organizing and planning recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of modern recreational philosophies and practices as it relates to sports, special activities and play.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in providing recreation and leisure time services.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. College course work in the field of Recreation, Physical Education or related field is desired.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment requiring prolonged sitting, standing, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily activities. May require constant walking, standing (including on concrete or uneven ground), climbing and exercising full range of motion of the arms, hands, wrists and fingers.
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, dragging and lifting equipment and/or office items weighing 25 lbs.
  • Ability to hear and convey detailed or important instructions or information verbally and accurately.
  • Average visual acuity to prepare and read documents.
  • Ability to communicate with both the public and co-workers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Ability to endure exposure to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.

The selection process may include, but is not limited to oral interview and/or written exams and oral presentations.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligible list from which hires may be made. The list is valid for up to one year, unless exhausted sooner.

Once an employment offer has been made, all candidates will participate in a confidential background investigation, have their fingerprints reviewed by the Department of Justice and be required to take a pre-employment medical exam which may include a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
