Job summary

NARA Northwest is seeking a Peer Support Specialist to join the housing team in Portland, OR. The role focuses on recovery support, symptom management, and coordination of care for individuals who have experienced homelessness.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, and the candidate must self-identify as having lived behavioral health experiences. CPR/First Aid certification is required, as is a valid driver’s license and reliable transport.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Must self-identify as a current or former recipient of behavioral health services and be willing to share lived experiences as appropriate.
• Must have completed a Peer Wellness Training approved by The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and qualify to be certified as a Peer Support Specialist within six months of hire date, or qualify to be credentialed as a Certified Recovery Mentor through MHACCBO.
• Knowledge of mental illness, addictions, and physical health and ability to work within an integrated care program.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and ability to engage with participants and coordinate care within a respectful team environment.
• Must pass CPR and First Aid certifications and keep them current.
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record and access to reliable transportation.
• Ability to pass pre-employment, for-cause drug tests and background checks.

Responsibilities

• Identify as a person with lived experience and inspire hope.
• Provide mentoring, advocacy, and direct assistance to help participants meet daily needs.
• Promote recovery through consumer self-help programs and community resources.
• Assess and adjust support plans to changing needs and behavioral health requirements.
• Deliver direct clinical-style support in individual or group settings under supervision.
• Assist participants in coordinating primary care, dental care, and specialist services.
• Organize social and recreational activities to enhance social skills and cultural engagement.
• Maintain professional boundaries and collaborate respectfully with staff and participants.
