Job summary

Alternative Wellness Services, Inc. is seeking a Peer Support Specialist to provide recovery-oriented, non-clinical support in Portland, ME, and Biddeford, ME.

The role emphasizes lived experience to assist individuals in setting goals, gaining independence, and building community connections. This full-time position involves travel to members’ homes and community sites, adherence to HIPAA, and collaboration with a care team to document progress in the EHR system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
• Personal lived experience with mental health services and/or substance use recovery.
• Willingness to self-disclose recovery experiences in peer settings.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team.
• Basic computer proficiency (MS Office, EHR).
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; travel throughout the service area.
• Willingness to obtain provisional CIPSS certification within 9 months if not already certified.

Responsibilities

• Provide recovery-oriented peer support, encouragement, and mentorship.
• Build supportive relationships and help members identify strengths and recovery goals.
• Assist members navigating mental health, substance use, medical, and community services.
• Connect individuals with community resources and support networks.
• Document work accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Participate in team meetings and adhere to HIPAA and regulatory standards.
• Support trauma-informed, ethical interactions with members and partners.
