Job summary

Alternative Wellness Services (AWS) seeks compassionate Peer Support Specialists to assist individuals in building goals and improving community connections through their recovery journeys. The role emphasizes non-clinical support and collaboration within a Behavioral Health Home team across Portland and Biddeford, with travel requirements.

The position is community-based, part-time (20–24 hours weekly), and involves flexible scheduling and occasional evenings.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
• Personal lived experience with mental health services and/or substance use recovery.
• Willingness to self-disclose recovery experiences in peer/community settings.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to travel regularly throughout the service area.

Responsibilities

• Provide hope and peer support using lived experience.
• Build supportive relationships with members.
• Assist members in identifying goals and recovery supports.
• Navigate mental health, substance use, medical, and community systems.
• Connect individuals with resources and networks.
• Encourage independence and wellness planning.
• Document accurately in the EHR.
• Participate in team meetings and care coordination.
• Maintain professional, trauma-informed interactions.
