Tutors at the Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) are SFSU students who are passionate about teaching, learning, and working with students to develop reading, writing, oral communication, and academic study skills across all majors. Throughout the semester, tutors provide support in one-on-one scheduled appointments and drop-in sessions.
As peer educators and campus leaders, TASC staff develop transferable professional skills via tutoring, training, collaboration, and reflective practices that strengthen competencies in communication, teamwork, critical thinking, professionalism, equity and inclusion, leadership, and career and self-development. These align with the NACE Career Competencies that are considered highly desirable in professional settings (and often cannot be replaced by AI).
Tutors receive paid training: a weekly training session (Friday 11-1) facilitated by TASC faculty, a mandatory all-staff workshop on the Friday before the semester starts; and asynchronous trainings for additional topics. Training is mandatory and begins in the first week of classes; new tutors start tutoring in week 3 of the semester.
