About this Job

Tutors at the Tutoring & Academic Support Center (TASC) are upper division and graduate SFSU students who are passionate about working with students to help them learn and develop the math, science, quantitative business, computing, and academic study skills across all majors. Tutors provide support in one-on-one appointments and drop-in sessions to help students at all levels achieve their academic goals.

In addition to providing academic support, tutors serve as peer educators and campus leaders who develop transferable professional skills aligned with the NACE Career Competencies. Through tutoring, training, collaboration, and reflective practice, tutors strengthen competencies in communication, teamwork, critical thinking, professionalism, equity and inclusion, leadership, and career and self-development. These align with the NACE Career Competencies that are considered highly desirable in professional settings (and often cannot be replaced by AI).

New tutors at TASC are supported with two hours of paid ongoing training every week in their first semester. The training, run by TASC faculty, is held every Wednesday afternoon sometime between 12-4pm (we will work to find a time block when all new tutors are available). The mandatory trainings are helpful and supportive, and they begin the first week of classes. All tutors participate in an all-staff workshop held the Friday before the semester starts. New tutors start working with students within the first month after required training. Both work study and non-work study positions are available.

Qualifications

Current graduate or upper-division SF State student enrolled at least half time (4 units for grad / 6 units for undergrad)

Able to come to paid training held every Wednesday afternoon during a 2-hour time block sometime between 12-4 pm

GPA of 3.0 or higher

Preference will be given to applicants who can make a year-long commitment and are able to work both in person and online.

Tutoring is provided on campus and online. Check the TASC website for current hours. Work hours are determined by available hours a tutor has, and how impacted the schedule is.

Tutors must be able to work a minimum of 8-12 hours per week (not to exceed 20 hours/week), which includes two hours of weekly training.

Future Opportunities at TASC

Once you work at TASC for more than one semester, you might also serve as an embedded tutor for a class; work on campaigns to help support students at risk; facilitate group sessions; create and run workshops; as well as other tasks to expand services and awareness of TASC resources.

You can also apply to be a student project lead, working collaboratively with other leads and TASC faculty and staff on projects that support SF State students, tutors, and instructors, upholding the center’s vision of creating equitable and welcoming environments so that everyone can learn.
