Turn this role into an interview — a resume and cover letter built around what this employer wants.
Herrera Homes Limited in Lancashire is seeking a Junior or Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join a compact, fast-moving commercial team. The business is growing, with several new sites and a mix of open market and registered provider work on the horizon.
You will handle day-to-day QS duties, assist with procurement and CVR reporting, and gain exposure to tender work on new sites during the next 6–12 months. A strong early career step with clear progression is offered.
A private housebuild business in East Lancashire with a ‘family feel’ that ‘value your input and influence’ are looking to add a Junior or Assistant Quantity Surveyor to their busy team with the business in a stage of growth as several new sites are expected to start over the next 9 months including some major developments – they have 800 in planning at the moment!
The Senior QS who’d be interviewing you has come from a PLC background previously, he said the best thing about working here in addition to that ‘family feel and valued input’ is you’re able to get on with your job, the red tape compared to working at a large builder is much less and you’re not ‘jumping through hoops’ to get a decision signed off – you’re really trusted to do your job.
And that job would be the usual day to days from a QS in a housebuilder, a couple of nuances with this builder in that they handle payments to the joinery and brickwork subbies and direct labour weekly (all others monthly) and you’d be working with the majority of trades including at roads and sewers level. There’d be some procurement, bi-monthly CVR’s and you’d be able to get involved with new sites at tender stage, too (analysis, negotiation, appointment).
As well as some very large sites due to come in (one over 200 in North Lancs and the imminent start of a ‘garden village’) they also do a lot with registered providers as well as open market, so there’s a real blend to proceedings.
And the short term is also rosy – they have planning in or approved for several large sites in Lancaster, Rochdale and Bolton – so they expect the next 6-12 months to be very busy. They’ll offer you a decent salary between £25,000 (graduate level) to £45,000 (intermediate) plus package depending on your experience but to lure the right person, there may be some sway in that. And the exciting thing for this is they'll speak to anyone from Graduate level up to Intermediate - so even if you don't have much or any private housebuild experience, still get in touch.
It’s a private business, the Senior QS says everyone mucks together and you won’t get pigeon-holed like you do in some other big PLC’s – this is a good chance to work with a small and compact Commercial team of 5 who all work together to get to the end result.
