Job description

The Re-Engagement Specialist works with students who have stopped responding and submitting academic work. This coach builds trust, finds the barrier, helps the student take an achievable academic step, and coordinates a thoughtful return to the campus or center Student Success Coach (SSC). For students who remain unreachable, the specialist provides a complete record for a timely team decision.

Core Coaching Responsibilities
  • Build respectful, consistent relationships with students and families, including those who are hesitant to engage with school or are balancing work, caregiving, transportation, housing, or other demands.
  • Use coaching meetings to set goals, review graduation progress, solve problems, celebrate progress, and hold students accountable for communication, attendance, and completed work.
  • Maintain two-way contact, coordinate with families and support systems, and document clear progress updates and engagement summaries in PowerSchool. For referred students, the specialist takes responsibility for touch point and attendance entries while working with the assigned SSC to avoid duplicate entries.
  • Working knowledge and use of BrightThinker, ThriveGuides, Edmentum, PowerSchool, GoGuardian, Google Workspace, NBS, and other assigned coach tools. Help students navigate a system when access or confusion is part of the barrier.
  • Review applicable SSPs, IEPs, and Section 504 Plans and coordinate with the appropriate staff so the restart plan includes needed support.
  • Work with teachers, counselors, the Learning Center Coordinator (LCC), and specialized staff to connect students to ThriveTime, academic help, course changes, and other services without losing track of the agreed next step.
Specialist Responsibilities
  • Review each Learning Center Coordinator referral for the work and communication history, attendance pattern, previous outreach, transcript, credits, course status, and known barriers before starting a new plan.
  • Make and document four outreach attempts each week during the initial 10-day specialist phase. Vary the method and timing, use an approachable tone, and pursue appropriate in person or virtual contact.
  • Meet with the student and family when contact is made. Listen for the reason for disengagement, agree on a contact routine, and help the student complete an immediate academic task.
  • Draft a realistic course schedule, identify completed work that may be recovered, and coordinate course reopening when appropriate. Submit the proposed build to the counselor for review and approved assignment.
  • Use NBS as an early credit opportunity when appropriate, monitor progress, and adjust the plan with the student, family, teacher, and counselor as needed.
  • Document the student’s work, meaningful conversations, next steps, and case status. Present unresolved cases to the Leadership Team after 10 specialist outreach days; do not make an independent withdrawal or funding decision.
  • Arrange a live handoff with the student, Learning Center Coordinator, and receive Student Success Coach before returning the student to active coaching. Share the plan and follow up to confirm the student is connected to the new coach.
  • Maintain a case log and report referrals, contacts, work completed, returns to active coaching, 30 and 60-days participation, and reasons students leave. Complete the specialist phase within 30 calendar days of referral unless an extension is approved.
  • Keep referred students on their assigned Student Success Coach rosters in BrightThinker and PowerSchool. Use access to all rosters to monitor work and maintain each referred student’s touch points and attendance on the assigned roster; coordinate with the Student Success Coach and Learning Center Coordinator before any roster change.
Qualification and Strengths
  • Experienced Student Success Coach who achieved a Meets Standards in the prior year’s quality assurance reviews and has demonstrated a record of engaging students virtually and in person.
  • Maintains an average of meets or exceeds on annual review scorecard.
  • Experience working with adolescents at risk of dropping out and families who may have had difficult school experiences or face immediate competing needs.
  • Strong relationship building, empathy, organization, follow-through, accurate documentation, creative problem solving, and sound judgment when a student is resistant or hard to reach.
  • Ability to work independently on urgent cases while keeping the assigned Student Success Coach, Learning Center Coordinator, Counselor, and Leadership Team informed and involved.
  • Associates degree would be preferable
  • Must have a High School Diploma
  • Must have current Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Measures of Success
  • The initial proposed target is reengagement of 70% of referrals, defined by two-way contact and submitted academic work. We will review the baseline and sustained participation before setting a permanent target.
  • Reduction of overall withdrawals, especially those coded as W4
  • Additional measures include timely outreach, successful handoffs, continued work at 30 and 60 days, appropriate NBS credit completion, and complete records for students whose enrollment must be reviewed.
