Job summary

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) seeks a Contractor in Charge (CIC) in Portland, OR to oversee railroad safety for freight, transit, and DOT projects. The CIC leads safety compliance, conducts briefings, and ensures FRA compliance on track-adjacent work.

Travel is 50%–85%. Requirements include a HS diploma, 2 years rail experience, a valid license, and completion of required training. NRSS offers hourly pay plus comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Strong computer, communication, and organizational skills.
• Communicates effectively in verbal and written formats.
• Ability for long-term travel assignments, including multi-month deployments.
• Valid Driver's License.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in a railroad company preferably in the maintenance of way or TY&E departments.
• Successfully completes all required federal, client, and company-specific training.

Responsibilities

• Oversee worksite safety and provide flagging services as needed.
• Ensure full compliance with FRA regulations (49 CFR 214) during track-adjacent work.
• Monitor track conditions, approaching trains, and work activities for safety.
• Coordinate train movements with dispatchers, engineers, and supervisors.
• Document all activities, briefings, incidents, and logs for management and regulators.
• Enforce Railroad, State, and Federal policies.
