Job summary

Norfolk Southern in the Argos, IN area seeks candidates for the Apprentice Signal Trainee program. This hands-on, field-based role trains you to install, inspect, and maintain railroad signal systems and grade crossings, combining classroom learning with on-the-job practice.

Training lasts about 52 weeks with extensive travel (up to 75%) during training, on-call duties, and eventual bid rights for Signal Maintainer roles. CDL required within 90 days; union membership (BRS) is part of the process.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Technical certificate or associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and electrical switch locks.
• Crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
• Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
