Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. in Woodland, CA, is seeking a Trainmaster to lead the assigned territory, overseeing both operational and administrative aspects to ensure safety and efficiency.

The role involves hands-on interviewing, hiring, training, coaching, and performance reviews, with responsibility for safety, schedules, payroll, and budget adherence. 5+ years in the railroad industry with supervisory duties are required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of work experience in the railroad industry with supervisory duties.
• Certified as a Locomotive Engineer or Conductor is a plus.
• Knowledge and understanding of FRA regulations.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in a safety-sensitive work environment.
• Situational awareness and decision-making abilities.

Responsibilities

• Manage the safety performance, operating practices, and financial productivity of the operation
• Interface with customers and interchange partners, monitor the quality of service in accordance with contractual terms, and quickly resolve issues or delays
• Communicate and coordinate with peer managers in all other departments.
• Assist in railcar-switching function as necessary to maintain operations
• Directly supervise train crew employees
• Manage schedules and payroll staying within the targeted budget
• Conduct and document efficiency/operational tests according to company and federal rules, regulations, policies and practices
• Respond to and investigate accidents / incidents (derailments, personal injury, etc.), prepare associated reports and provide proper notification
• Partner with the General Manager and Human Resources on hiring and employee relations according to policies when necessary
• Coach and train employees in operating practices according to federal regulations and company policies
• Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned

Skills

5+ years supervisory experience

7+ years railroad experience (pref)

Locomotive Engineer/Conductor cert a +

FRA regulations knowledge

Education

Associate’s degree or equivalent

Bachelor’s degree preferred
