Job summary

Amtrak seeks an experienced Surveyor to oversee track surveys and right-of-way mapping on Amtrak-owned or maintained properties. The role coordinates field work with Electric Traction, Signals & Communications, Structures, Division Engineers, Engineering Production and Real Estate, while maintaining equipment and organizing field notes.

Based out of Wilmington, DE or Philadelphia, PA, the position emphasizes office work with essential field components, ensuring accuracy in construction layouts

Qualifications

  • Fundamental knowledge of general civil engineering principles.
  • Ability to read, understand and produce engineering drawings and documents.
  • Ability to absorb information, think critically and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Willingness to learn CAD software and become a highly skilled technical draftsman.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point).
  • Attention to detail and completeness.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees field survey crew or consultant-provided survey personnel.
  • Performs technical survey tasks using mobile surveying solutions, GNSS equipment, and digital levels; reviews field notes and sketches.
  • Directs the layout of engineering designs in the field for use by construction and maintenance forces.
  • Creates survey plans for transmittal to design team members and the public.
  • Reviews track and right-of-way surveys and verifies lines/grades within clearance envelopes and boundaries.
