Job summary

HDR, Inc. in Northern Virginia is seeking a Rail Engineer to provide technical expertise and design support for freight and transit rail projects.

The role involves leading design tasks, preparing plans and cost estimates, and coordinating with project managers and other disciplines. The successful candidate will oversee the project lifecycle from feasibility through construction, review junior staff work, and manage client communications.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with 3 years of rail or civil engineering experience.
  • Alternatively, Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with 5 years of rail or general civil engineering experience.
  • Experience with OpenRail Designer or AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, InRoads, Autoturn, and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and design support for complex rail infrastructure projects.
  • Lead project lifecycle activities from feasibility analysis to final design and construction.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and interface with other disciplines.
  • Support project managers in scope development, budgeting, scheduling and documentation.
  • Prepare detailed designs, specifications and cost estimates for track, drainage, utilities and minor structures.
  • Coordinate with subconsultants, review junior staff work, and maintain client communications.
  • Lead design sessions on site and ensure adherence to quality plans.
  • Travel regionally for site visits and inspections up to 15-25% of time.
