Job summary

ABB is seeking an experienced R&D Team Leader in Pinetops, NC to drive development of ANSI Grid Components and Instrument Transformer technologies. You will support a dynamic team, establish a clear technology vision, and manage the R&D portfolio with internal and external partners.

This onsite role requires leadership experience and a strong background in electrical equipment design. The position emphasizes strategic operations, cost forecasting, and collaboration with product, manufacturing

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in engineering required (electrical or electronics preferred) plus a minimum of 12 years experience in product development and design of related electrical equipment.
• Must have at least 2 years of prior leadership/direct managerial experience.
• Must have at least 5 years of prior strategic operations experience blended with project management (role is 20% technical and 80% operational/supervisory).
• Strong analytical skills with a solutions-oriented engineering mindset; able to work in a team and independently.
• Experience with MV/HV Instrument Transformer & Sensor, Cutouts, Switches, reclosers etc. is preferred
• Experience with product standards such as UL, IEEE, IEC, NEMA; experience coordinating simulations for dielectric, static or dynamic forces for various products.
• Knowledge of switchgear design, motor control centers and SCADA protection principles is desirable.
• Willingness to travel up to 20% (mostly domestic).
• Candidates must have work authorization to work in the US.

Responsibilities

• Support the Technology Center Manager for an assigned domain in planning and managing R&D activities and resources, including monthly reporting and cost forecasting; collaborate with Product Managers, Project Managers and leadership throughout the product development life cycle.
• Assist Project Leader with cross-functional design reviews, concept analysis, and cost evaluation of designs; manage team workload and allocate tasks to ensure future capability development.
• Prepare plans and optimize the project portfolio; plan capacity, people and resources for R&D projects; oversee timely and quality execution using internal/ external resources.
• Partner with Local Business Unit management to ensure representation of needs within R&D projects and provide feedback to product, manufacturing and R&D strategies.
