Job summary

Barnstable Public Schools in Hyannis, MA seeks a Community Mentor to foster a positive school culture, engage with BHS/BIS students in common areas, and connect youth with community resources. You will work with counselors and staff to support at-risk students and expand the diversity of adult role models.

Reporting to the Principal and Dropout Prevention Coordinator, the role involves de-escalating situations, assisting with mentoring in Tier 2 and 3 interventions, and participating in mentor

Qualifications

  • Excellent relationship building skills with school aged students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults.
  • Experience working with youth of diverse cultures and socio-economic statuses.

Responsibilities

  • Connect with BHS and BIS students (and possibly BUES) in student spaces such as hallways, lobbies, libraries, cafeterias, etc.
  • Work with counselors and staff to provide community resources.
  • Assisting staff in developing positive school culture throughout the building ( in the hallways, when invited into classes, during lunches etc.).
  • Mentor students referred by administrators and/or counselors in Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions.
  • De-escalate situations within a calm and appropriate manner.
  • Participate in a BPS mentor training as a part of on-boarding.
