Job summary

Westfield Public Schools is seeking a part-time Student Mentor for St. Mary’s Grades 5-6 to provide academic support, build trusted relationships, and help students navigate school life during the 2026-2027 school year.

The role runs 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. during the school day, offering up to 10 hours per week with a $30 per hour stipend.

Qualifications

• Two years of relevant experience preferred.
• Bachelor degree preferred.

Job Description

POSITION: Student Mentor for St. Mary’s

QUALIFICATIONS: Desire to work with at-risk students to support both academic and personal growth; bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required

REPORTS TO: Principal or Principal Designee

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of authorized administrators, student mentors shall:

• Build relationship with students so students have a trusted adult to turn to when needed:
• Hold high expectations of young people and be a role model for students
• Offer opportunities to problem solve, exchange ideas, and ask questions
• Use strategies to motivate and build self-esteem/confidence in students
• Provide academic support to ensure student achievement:
• Assist students to prioritize and organize schedule, school work, and other student responsibilities, including developing good study habits
• Support students in content areas to help them meet course expectations
• Collaborate with teachers and families to ensure school work is complete and up-to date, share information, and determine strategies that best support learning
• Promote personal and social skills to help students navigate school and social situations:
• Listen to student concerns, set goals, create action plans, and follow through with students in order to solve issues
• Help students make informed decisions, and support students in developing self-advocacy skills
• Collaborate with guidance counselors, administrators, teachers, and families to assist as necessary with support for students
• Support student attendance and punctuality to ensure students have a chance to learn:
• Monitor daily attendance; implement strategies to overcome attendance barriers
• Notify appropriate support systems of any concerns/information (admin, counselor, families) that will improve attendance
• Complete mentor documentation in a timely fashion, including mentor logs and time cards

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Must be available during the school day: 8:00 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.
• Must participate in mentor training provided by WPS
• Part-time employment - Up to 10 hours per week

SALARY

Stipend- $30.00 per hour

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT

September 2026 – June 2027

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of St. Mary’s evaluation protocols, observations by St. Mary’s Administration, and student feedback.

Subject to grant funding.
