Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs is offering a Quality Engineering Internship in New Carlisle, IN. You will work with engineers to support the Metallurgical Lab, perform safety inspections, and manage calibration and data analysis for steel production processes.

The internship focuses on hands-on lab work, data-driven problem solving, and safety compliance, with potential pathways to full-time opportunities. Enrollment in a BS program and sophomore standing by mid-2027 are required.

Qualifications

• Pursuing BS in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or related field.
• Sophomore year completed by Summer 2027.

Responsibilities

• Perform monthly safety inspections and observations in Metallurgical Dept.
• Ensure adherence to plant safety policies and safe work practices.
• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.
• Calibrate and maintain test equipment.
• Support production, testing, and shipping with lean processes.
• Maintain steelmaking spectrometer lab and on-call support.
• Assist metallurgical investigations and data mining of performance metrics.
• Coordinate with third-party testing and inspections.

As a Quality Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.

Summary Of Responsibilities

• Complete monthly safety inspections and safety observations for the Metallurgical Department.


• Work safely and assure plant safety policies are followed.


• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.


• Manage test equipment calibrations.


• Create new operating efficiencies to maintain the production, testing, and shipping of steel with a leaner workforce.


• Maintain Steelmaking spectrometer lab, calibration, and on-call support.


• Responsible for data-mining investigations with metallurgical grade performance, chemistry, scrap charges, etc.


• Responsible for Metallurgical grade maintenance and development.


• Manage 3rd party testing inspection.


• Maintain tracking of Steelmaking scrap, referral, and diversions.


• Responsible for Metallurgical investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in the field of Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or other related technical degree


• Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027
