Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs is offering an internship/coop in Rockport, IN for students pursuing a BS in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Chemistry. You will work with engineering and operations teams to support safety, testing, and data-driven improvements in a metallurgical lab environment.

As a Quality Engineering Intern, you will participate in safety compliance, lab workflow, material testing, and data analysis projects with potential for future full-time opportunities.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in BS program in a technical field related to materials science or metallurgy.
• Completion of at least sophomore year by Summer 2027.
• Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

• Complete monthly safety inspections and safety observations for the Metallurgical Department.
• Work safely and ensure plant safety policies are followed.
• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.
• Manage test equipment calibrations.
• Develop operating efficiencies to support production, testing, and shipping with lean practices.
• Maintain the steelmaking spectrometer lab and provide calibration and on-call support.
• Conduct data-mining investigations related to metallurgical grade performance, chemistry, and scrap charges.
• Maintain metallurgical grade maintenance and development.
• Oversee 3rd party testing inspections.
• Track steelmaking scrap, referrals, and diversions; support metallurgical investigations.

As a Quality Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• Complete monthly safety inspections and safety observations for the Metallurgical Department.

• Manage workflow in the mechanical and chemical test lab.


• Manage test equipment calibrations.


• Create new operating efficiencies to maintain the production, testing, and shipping of steel with a leaner workforce.


• Maintain Steelmaking spectrometer lab, calibration, and on-call support.


• Responsible for data-mining investigations with metallurgical grade performance, chemistry, scrap charges, etc.


• Responsible for Metallurgical grade maintenance and development.


• Manage 3rd party testing inspection.


• Maintain tracking of Steelmaking scrap, referral, and diversions.


• Responsible for Metallurgical investigations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in the field of Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or other related technical degree


• Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027
