Job summary

Mattel, Inc. seeks a detail-oriented Editor to join the Publishing team in El Segundo, CA. You will independently edit titles for readers aged 8 through adult, coordinate with writers and packagers, and partner with Design, Production, and Brand teams to shape compelling publishing projects.

You’ll manage workflows, stay current on publishing trends, and contribute to marquee licensed publishing initiatives under the Senior Editor’s guidance.

Qualifications

• 2–4 years of professional editorial experience, preferably in children's, licensed, or trade publishing.
• Strong understanding of the publishing process from concept development through production.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the children's publishing market; familiarity with the adult trade market is a plus.
• Experience editing fiction and/or narrative nonfiction, with strong developmental and line editing skills.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work with authors, agents, freelancers, and internal partners.
• Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Manage and edit assigned titles across Mattel's publishing program for readers ages 8 through adult, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and meet editorial and brand standards.
• Support the Senior Editor on larger publishing initiatives, providing editorial support on marquee titles and select licensed publishing projects.
• Manage editorial projects through all stages of development, including brainstorming story ideas, coordinating with authors and packagers, providing editing, and reviewing layouts with copy editors.
• Collaborate with Design, Production, and Operations to meet creative, production, and scheduling goals.
• Partner with Brand and Content teams to develop original stories and publishing concepts.
• Manage internal and external approval workflows, incorporating stakeholder feedback while maintaining editorial quality.
• Maintain title information, metadata, pricing requests, and publishing documentation.
• Stay informed on trends in children’s and adult publishing to bring fresh ideas to Mattel's program.
• Cultivate relationships with authors, freelancers, and partners to support project development.
• Present concepts, manuscripts, and project updates to Senior Editor and cross-functional partners.
