Job summary

The City of New Carrollton is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Operator for its Public Works team in New Carrollton, MD. The role involves operating light to heavy equipment, performing inspections, and supporting streets, parks, trails, and infrastructure projects.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, at least two years of heavy equipment experience, and the ability to work outdoors in various conditions. CDL Class B is required and safety training will be provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Two years of experience operating heavy equipment.
• Two years of experience performing heavy manual labor in construction, maintenance, landscaping or Public Works.
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather.
• Ability to safely operate and inspect heavy equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work well in a crew.
• Proficiency in accessing, reading, composing, and replying to emails.

Responsibilities

• Safely operates a variety of equipment and vehicles including loaders, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, and snow removal vehicles.
• Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports unsafe conditions.
• Assists with stump removal, trail clearing, site prep, excavation, grading, and material handling.
• Participates in playground, park, and landscaped area maintenance and development.
• Performs roadway and driveway maintenance such as pothole repair and patching.
• Loads, transports, and unloads materials and equipment as required.
• Engages in physically demanding tasks and assists with snow and ice operations as needed.
