Job description

Public Works Equipment Operator

Under general supervision, performs the full range of duties assigned to classes in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. Operates complex heavy motorized street sweeping equipment and heavy construction equipment used in street, water, flood control channels, and sewer maintenance in the Public Works department. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties. Occasionally assists in training lower-level Public Works maintenance staff. Performs other related duties as required.

The Public Works Equipment Operator is an advanced journey-level class responsible for a variety of heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and construction tasks. This classification is distinguished from the lower classification of Public Works Maintenance Worker II by the operation of heavy equipment and multiple power tools in construction operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. At least two (2) years of full-time work experience consistent with the duties of a Public Works Maintenance Worker II, including at least one (1) year of training in heavy equipment operation.
2. High school diploma or equivalent.
3. Possession of a valid Class B California driver’s license with Tanker Endorsement, or an equivalent license from another issuing government entity; ability to obtain a valid Class A California driver's license depending on assignment and department needs.

Application and Examination Process:

Only applicants meeting the qualification standards by the application deadline will participate in the examination process. The process may include:

1. Application Package Review (Qualifying only): Based on the information provided, the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate.
2. In-Person Performance Exam: Weighs 100%. Candidates must score 70% or higher to qualify for the eligibility list.

The City Manager, upon recommendation of the department head, will make the final selection and appointment from the eligibility list.
