Job summary

Manatee County is seeking a Public Works Director to lead a multi‑discipline department, guiding long‑range planning, capital programs and transportation projects from Bradenton, Florida. You will set priorities, manage budgets, negotiate contracts and report to the County Administrator.

The role requires a civil engineering or related degree, 8+ years of senior management, 3+ years of budgeting experience, and a Florida P.E. license is highly desired. Master’s degree preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, business administration, public administration or related discipline.
• Minimum eight (8) years management experience in a multi-disciplinary organizational setting.
• Minimum of three (3) years high level budgetary and/or financial management experience.
• Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience.
• Master's degree in related field desired.
• Prior related experience in a local governmental setting desired.
• Current Florida Professional Engineer (P. E.) License highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Direct activities and programs of the department to ensure adherence to laws, regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
• Develop and administer work programs, practices, procedures and policies for improving the effectiveness of Public Works programs and projects.
• Develop and manage the annual budgets for the department and perform cost and productivity analyses.
• Negotiate or participate in negotiation of contracts and agreements related to Transportation projects.
• Communicate clearly, effectively and professionally; present to the Board of County Commissioners and the public.
• Direct assigned staff, including training, performance evaluation and personnel actions.
