Job summary

The Maine Bureau of the Budget is seeking a Budget Analyst in Augusta to provide budget, financial, and program analysis for state departments and agencies. You will develop knowledge of programs, funding sources, statutory requirements, operating plans, and fiscal trends to support budget development and execution.

The analyst independently completes routine and moderately complex tasks, prepares baseline estimates, trend analyses, forecasts, and multiyear projections, and reviews data for

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of professional budgeting/finance experience.
  • Equivalent related experience may substitute for education.
  • A master's degree may substitute for up to two years of required experience.
  • Preference for experience with governmental budgets and funding sources.
  • Understanding of legislative process and financial reporting is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain understanding of assigned programs, funding sources, and fiscal trends.
  • Analyze budget, accounting, payroll, revenue, expenditures, and workload data.
  • Review agency assumptions and supporting documentation for reasonableness and completeness.
  • Prepare baseline estimates, trend analyses, forecasts, and multiyear projections.
  • Monitor revenue, expenditures, encumbrances, payroll, positions, and related activity.
  • Communicate findings clearly to staff and decision-makers.
