Job summary

City of Indianapolis Office of Corporation Counsel seeks a front-line attorney to handle a wide range of civil litigation for City-County agencies. You will act as an assistant corporation counsel within OCC’s litigation division, involving federal civil rights matters, torts, contracts, and regulatory issues.

The role requires strong judgment, analytical ability, and exceptional legal writing, with responsibility for pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, and trial advocacy.

Qualifications

• J.D. from ABA-accredited law school.
• Indiana license to practice law.
• Must be admitted to practice in the Southern District of Indiana.
• Proficiency with Westlaw and familiarity with electronic filing and records management systems.
• At least two years’ experience as a licensed attorney.

Responsibilities

• Represent City-County and related agencies in civil litigation in state and federal court.
• Handle a diverse range of civil litigation matters, including federal civil rights, torts, contracts, and administrative issues.
• Prepare complaints, answers, and other pleadings; research and file motions and briefs; handle discovery and depositions; participate in hearings; engage in settlement negotiations; and provide trial advocacy.
• Possess independent judgment with support from senior attorneys, while seeking assistance when needed for client interests.
• Develop areas of expertise over time and rapidly digest new information and legal issues.
