Job summary

State of South Dakota invites applications for an Administrative Law Intern position in Pierre for the Summer session (May - August). The intern will assist with legal writing, research, and filings for the Office of Hearing Examiners, and will attend hearings to review motions and drafts.

Preference given to SD residents and SD institution students. This is an excellent entry into public service and administrative law.

Qualifications

• Requires completion of one year of law school (or equivalent).
• Must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student at start of internship.
• Preference may be given to juniors/seniors, SD residents, and SD-institution students.

Responsibilities

• Assist with legal writing, research, and filings for the Office of Hearing Examiners.
• Attend administrative and motions hearings and review motions, briefs, and files for drafting decisions.
• Learn to assemble a legal file from start to finish and review for procedural errors.
• Collaborate closely with ALJs and staff to evaluate and interpret laws.
• Support public-service oriented litigation with emphasis on tax, insurance, or health law.
