South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources and Administration is seeking an Administrative Law Intern for the Summer session (May - August) in Pierre. The intern will gain hands-on experience with the administrative hearing process, legal research, and public-sector decision making.

APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.
The Administrative Law Internship provides hands‑on experience in the administrative hearing process, legal research, and public‑sector decision making. The Office of the Hearing Examiner (OHE) summer intern will assist with legal writing, research, and filings for the Office of Hearing Examiners. The successful applicant will attend administrative and motions hearings. They will review motions, briefs, and files for writing decisions for the ALJs. They will learn to put together a legal file from start to finish and review the case for procedural errors. The intern will closely collaborate with the ALJs and staff to evaluate and interpret the laws. This is a perfect position for someone who is looking for a public service career or litigation with an emphasis on tax, insurance, or health law.
The applicant must have completed a year of law school.
Applicant must be enrolled as a part‑time/full‑time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
