Job summary

South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources and Administration is seeking an Administrative Law Intern for the Summer session (May - August) in Pierre. The intern will gain hands-on experience with the administrative hearing process, legal research, and public-sector decision making.

The role involves assisting with writing, research, and filings for the Office of Hearing Examiners, attending hearings, and reviewing motions and briefs to draft decisions.

Qualifications

• Must have completed one year of law school.
• Enrolled as part-time or full-time student in upcoming or preceding semester.
• Preference may be given to South Dakota residents or students of SD institutions.

Responsibilities

• Assist with legal writing, research, and filings for the Office of Hearing Examiners.
• Attend administrative and motions hearings.
• Review motions, briefs, and files for writing decisions.
• Learn to assemble a legal file from start to finish and check for procedural errors.
• Collaborate with ALJs and staff in evaluating and interpreting the laws.
