Job summary

Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) is seeking an Accountant to support financial operations for essential public transportation. You will prepare analyses, reconciliations, audit schedules and journal entries, work with the chart of accounts, and resolve complex issues across multiple groups.

GAAP and government accounting standards guide your work; you will contribute to fixed assets, revenue, AR and regional eFares activities while collaborating with cross-department teams and boards.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field and three to five years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and methods; governmental accounting laws and guidelines; and Authority rules, regulations, procedures and functions.
• Ability to analyze fiscal records, perform complex written and numerical work, and interpret laws and regulations affecting financial activities.
• Ability to assist with large public-sector budgets, develop and recommend sound financial strategies, and make decisions under pressure.
• Ability to prepare and present accurate narrative, statistical and financial reports, including reports for the HART Board, State Auditor, and federal and state grants.
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide updates to senior managers, elected officials and community groups.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with public officials, public and private agencies, businesses and the public, and collaborate with directors and senior managers.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work, meet deadlines, manage stress and interruptions, and respond to changing goals and needs.
• Ability to perform professional work involving data, people and technology; maintain strict confidentiality; and contribute as a flexible team leader or team member.
• Knowledge of accounting-related data processing applications, Excel and word processing software.

Responsibilities

• Identify and document capital asset purchases and coordinate annual asset inventory.
• Review travel requests and expense reports; prepare annual financial reports for the National Transit Database.
• Complete monthly fuel tax returns, related journal entries and reconciliations; backup for Count Room duties and night audits.
• Process fare-card sales orders; set up customer accounts; generate invoices and resolve billing questions.
• Record sales, risk insurance claims and other transactions for monthly billing; review trial balances; prepare general journal entries.
• Report fare-card sales amounts to internal and external users; boards.
• Audit revenue streams including fare boxes; maintain change machines and ticket vending machines.
• Audit AR pass inventory, travel requests and reimbursements; balance sheet reconciliations.
• Review data recorded by the Accounting Assistant – GFI; report monthly ridership; manage special-event reporting keys.
• Serve as THS streetcar accounting resource; bill City of Tampa; attend THS Board meetings.
• Develop financial test plans; analyze results; troubleshoot issues for regional eFares back-office.
