Job Summary

The position of Public Safety Officer supports Covenant House NY's mission to foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its clients, staff, and visitors. Officers will execute comprehensive security measures and must adapt physically and psychologically to the organization's changing needs and priorities.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Gather data, compile information, and write reports.
  • Knowledge of searching procedures and safety inspections.
  • Conduct safety patrols in and around buildings as assigned.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Operate departmental equipment such as radios, cameras, computers, and online applications.
  • Communicate calmly and courteously in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Respond promptly to calls for assistance.
  • Conduct emergency drills per prescribed procedures.
  • Enforce crowd control procedures.
  • De-escalate and intervene in physical or verbal altercations.
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, overnight shifts, and holidays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Qualifications
  • At least one year of security experience required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain New York State security guard licensure, including all mandated training and certifications, throughout employment.
  • Exhibit strong customer service skills.
