Middlebury College is seeking a Public Safety Officer to provide safety and security services across campus, promoting a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, guests and property.
The role covers patrols, incident reporting, emergencies, and enforcing policies, with responsibilities including vehicle checks, locking/unlocking buildings, transporting individuals when needed, and responding to alarms.
Providessafety and security services which include the implementation andadministration of programs that assist the campus community inmaintaining order and/or improving the personal safety of thestudents, faculty, staff, guests, and property of theCollege.
This is a full-time, benefits eligible,hourly position with a hiring range of $25.20 - $29.79 perhour.
Patrol campusbuildings and grounds, in assigned areas by various means, topromote safety, identify unsafe conditions and suspicious activity,document violations of College policies and state laws, and respondto incidents and complaints as necessary.Respond toemergencies, serious incidents and requests for assistance. Servesas a first responder to fire alarms, medical emergencies andconflicts on campus.Manageincidents using problem-solving, mediation and de-escalationstrategies in accordance with College policies andprocedures.Conductpreliminary and follow up investigations as needed. Completedetailed & professional incident reports and document shiftactivity via logs.Educate thecampus community on topics in safety, security and College policythrough interpersonal communications, organized instruction andenforcement.Providegeneral security services for the college community such as lockingand unlocking buildings, rooms, gates andvehicles.Transportstudents to and from the campus Health and Wellness Center andlocal hospital.Maintain safeand orderly campus parking lots and roadways through parkingeducation and enforcement.
High schooldiploma. Post secondary education preferred.Previousexperience in higher education, institutional safety and securityor law enforcement is desirable.Ability tosatisfactorily complete specialized on-the-job trainingrequired.Validdriver's license and the ability to pass College-administereddriving test required.Consideredan essential staff position for College operations. Must haveflexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays and occasionallong shifts. Will be required to work during designated "blackout"periods and campus emergencies.Must haveproficiency in conflict resolution and possess strong verbal andwritten communication skills.Must handleconfidential matters with appropriate discretion and pass extensiveinvestigative background check.
Must be ableto climb multiple flights of stairs several times per day. Must beable to walk long distances, for extended periods of time and onvarious types of terrain. Must be able to sit, stand and drive forextended periods of time. Must be able to get in and out of avehicle several times per day. Must be able to lift and carry up to100 lbs. occasionally. Must work in inclement weather – hot,cold, rain, snow, ice.
