Job summary

Middlebury College in Vermont seeks a full-time, hourly Campus Safety Officer to join our safety team. The role requires patrolling campus facilities, responding to emergencies, and enforcing college policies to protect students, staff, and visitors.

The position emphasizes incident documentation, conflict de-escalation, and confidentiality. A high school diploma is required, with preference for higher education experience and a valid driver’s license. Evening/weekend shifts may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma. Post secondary education preferred.
• Previous experience in higher education, institutional safety and security or law enforcement is desirable.
• Ability to satisfactorily complete specialized on-the-job training required.
• Valid driver’s license and the ability to pass College-administered driving test required.
• Essential staff position with flexibility for evenings, weekends, holidays and emergencies.
• Proficiency in conflict resolution and strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Must handle confidential matters with discretion and pass extensive background check.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus buildings and grounds to promote safety and document violations.
• Respond to emergencies as a first responder to alarms, medical incidents, and conflicts.
• Manage incidents using problem-solving, mediation and de-escalation per College policies.
• Conduct investigations and complete detailed incident reports and shift logs.
• Educate the campus community on safety topics through instruction and enforcement.
• Provide general security services such as locking/unlocking buildings and securing vehicles.
• Transport students to the Health Center or hospital as needed.
• Maintain safe campus parking lots and roadway enforcement.
