Job description

Hiring Incentive - 3 Installment Payments

$4,000 paid upon completion of the fifth full pay period

$4,000 paid upon successful completion of field training program

$4,000 paid upon successful completion of probationary period

Description:

Under general supervision, the incumbent receives and processes routine and emergency calls and alarms; dispatches public safety and public works field units as required; provides pre-arrival instructions; enters, retrieves, and uses data from various automated law enforcement information systems; coordinates with other emergency service providers as appropriate; assists in training less experienced personnel; learns applicable policies, procedures, and work methods; performs other related duties as required. The Public Safety Dispatcher is an entry-level position that allows the development of journey-level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents learn and perform various technical law enforcement office support duties related to communications, record keeping, and public contact.

  • Receives and processes routine and emergency calls and alarms; dispatches public safety and public works units; provides pre-arrival instructions; uses law enforcement information systems; coordinates with other emergency services; assists in training.
  • Develops understanding of policies, procedures, and work methods.
  • Enters calls for service, dispatches units, monitors status, interprets service levels, retrieves warrant info, and coordinates multi-agency responses.
  • Informs Watch Commander, maintains call records, receives calls from other agencies, and provides information via telephone and teletype.
  • Monitors station security, alarm systems, and provides matron services when needed.
  • Responds to questions, records reports, provides information, and resolves issues.
  • Establishes positive relationships with community organizations, agencies, staff, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Must be currently employed as a Dispatcher with a law enforcement agency. Typically, requires two years of experience involving public contact and record keeping, and a high school diploma or equivalent.

License/Certificate:

Must obtain a Dispatch Certificate from P.O.S.T. within one year of appointment. Typing speed of at least 45 words per minute is desirable.

Knowledge of:

Office practices, city geography, law enforcement procedures, communication regulations, basic math, laws, report writing, and office equipment.

Ability to:

Work accurately and calmly under pressure, learn dispatch systems, work flexible hours, interpret laws, organize tasks, work independently and in teams, make decisions, and communicate effectively.

Skill to:

Operate law enforcement dispatch systems effectively.
