Job summary

Alliance Defending Freedom seeks a Legal Counsel to support its government affairs team, providing legal analysis on federal and state legislation affecting free speech, religious liberty, parental rights, and family issues. This role requires travel to meet legislators and stakeholders and to present testimony, with extensive state-legislative travel anticipated during sessions.

A JD and bar admission are required. Minimum qualifications include a J.D.

Qualifications

• J.D. with active license in at least one US state
• 1+ year of public policy advocacy or legislative work at federal/state level
• Familiarity with federal and state legislative processes and policy issues related to free speech, religious liberty, parental rights, sanctity of life, and family

Responsibilities

• Draft legislation and policies related to free speech, religious liberty, parental rights, sanctity of life, and marriage and family.
• Review, track, and report on a large federal and state legislative portfolio of bills affecting ADF’s issues and priorities.
• Develop working knowledge of new legislation and its impact on ADF’s core issue areas.
• Collaborate with issue area experts to develop analysis, position papers, and summaries of legislation.
• Conduct research and prepare reports analyzing court precedents affecting legislative priorities.
• Travel extensively to meet policy groups, legislators, staff, and stakeholders to discuss policy and advocacy strategies.
• Provide in-person, virtual, and written testimony and presentations on legal implications of proposed legislation.
• Build and maintain relationships with government officials and policy allies.
