Job summary

Alliance Defending Freedom seeks a Legal Counsel to join the government affairs team, focusing on advising on federal and state legislation and policies affecting free speech, religious liberty, parental rights, sanctity of life, and marriage and family.

The role requires monitoring a broad legislative portfolio, collaborating with issue experts, and presenting to government officials and policy allies to advance priority agendas.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and active license in at least one US state bar, with ability to meet admission requirements in the relevant jurisdiction within one year.
• 1+ year of public policy advocacy, governmental relations/affairs, or legislative work at federal or state level.

Responsibilities

• Draft legislation and policies related to free speech, religious liberty, parental rights, sanctity of life, and marriage and family.
• Review, track, and report on a large federal and state legislative portfolio.
• Develop working knowledge of new legislation and its impact on core issue areas.
• Work with issue area experts to develop analysis, position papers, and summaries of legislation.
• Conduct research and prepare reports analyzing court precedents affecting legislative priorities.
• Travel extensively to meet with policy groups, legislators, and stakeholders.
• Provide frequent testimony and presentations on legal implications of proposed legislation.
• Encourage and facilitate effective relationships with government and policy allies.
• Speak publicly to media and crowds.
• Collaborate within ADF and with external allies.
